Although I wanted to take make a really nice video of how the house was in August, I kept forgetting and shot 4 mini videos about 10 minutes before we left to head to the airport. So, here is the first of 4 short videos of the house as it looked as we said goodbye, again. This video shows the front "garden" - check out how big the basil is - then the front stairs leading up showing the new tile.

Brasil - August 09 - Surprising The Brasilians

Arrived today, August 16, 2009. The flight was fine since I basically slept and tried to ignore the guy sitting next to me. Delta at JFK was a nightmare last night - total chaos - and I was very happy to land in Sao Paulo. The first thing I did was stop at Frango Asado, a type of trucker's stop on the highway - for great coffee. Picked up this orchid for Ruy's mother.

This video is me banging on her door screaming "Delivery for Rute Pedroso" over and over. She kept screaming "I'm Coming" from the other side. No one knew I was coming - not even Neginha, the dog, who seemed the most excited to see me!!

Please excuse Ruy's finger in the beginning of the video. For a photographer, he has finger issues.

With so many folks asking to see what the house looks like, I have taken a video of the whole house. Forgive me, I think I walked a bit too fast and I hope no one gets dizzy from the video. LOL Please, keep in mind that, all the walls will be painted soon, the outside will be painted, kitchen cabinets are being built now, and there is still lots to do but...we have water, toilets, a frig, a stove, and the Internet!!

Brasil Transportation - Old and New

It's very interesting to me that horses are still widely used here in the countryside. The city has about 50,000 people but grew out of sugar cane plantations. The plantations still dot the countryside and can be seen from our house. So horse and buggy are still used thoughout the city by many farmers. Here is a video of old and new transportation meeting on our street.

Brasil 2009 Day 3 - Resevior/Waterfall

Ahh, today they dragged me to the local resevior/waterfall to go swimming. Back story - this is located on the Usina, which is the huge sugar cane factory. Back in the day, the Usina allowed it's employees to live on the Usina. Ruy was born here and grew up in a house with his grandparents. When he was 7 years old his family moved from the Usina to Sao Paulo city. The resevior (represa in portuguese) was where they used to hang out. The water was really strong due to the recent rains so we didn't go very far.

Brasil 2009 Day 2 - India invades Brasil

Ok, a back story here. There is a new soap opera on brasilian television that tells the story of brasilians living in India. It is all the rage here. The whole show was shot in India at many major Indian cities and sites. So, of course, saris are all the rage here. Ruy and I went to Jackson Heights before he left to get the girls some saris. Here they are all dressed up and dancing to indian music - from the soap opera.

Day 2 here was a bit - well - boring. I basically unpacked. Sorted through all my stuff, started to prepare for my classes. Then Marina, Gabi, and Rute (Ruy's mom) decided to act stupid and put in some different fake teeth and make funny faces. Afterwards, we walked across town for dinner to this cute little outside bar where we dined on fried fish, mashed potatoes with sausage, great beer, and, afterwards, ice cream for Marina and Gabi. Then they fell asleep due to such a long day.

Brasil 2009 - Day 1

Well, I arrived. On Friday morning. This is a few days late but I've been having fun. So shoot me. LOL. Ruy picked me up with Gabi and Marina. I was supposed to surprise them but they surprised me. Not fair but I am not complaining. I am so happy to be back here. Sunny skies, green trees, birds everywhere.

Yesterday was a big Brasilian festival in New York City. It was very crowded but lots of fun. We took my brother, sister in law, my niece Abigail to the festival.

I am so excited and proud to announce that my friend Elisa's new venture - the Petal Belle Cofferie - is open for business. They will be serving Belgian Waffles, Belgian Liéges, Cappuccino, Mochaccino, Espresso, Gelato, Rustic Breads, Pastries, and more.

For months now Elisa and her husband Michael have been renovating what used to be a fish store in SOHO. They ripped out walls to find the original brick wall and beautiful old windows - all that were covered with sheetrock and layers of paint. They have kept the old tin ceiling and original tiled floor. They added wainscoating, vintage ceiling fans, and old world charm wallpaper. Not to mention the church pews that line the brick wall. You step into this charming cafe and you feel as if you have been transported out of NYC into old world France or Belgium.

What is a Liége? They originate from the city of Liège in eastern Belgium. These waffles are immensely popular throughout all of Europe. Small vendors can be found populating the pedestrian streets of many European cities. In keeping with tradition, this authentic waffle is prepared in a specialized cast iron press. The other day we drove to one of the malls near us (we have 3 really nice ones). I really wanted to check out this one (Shopping Iguatemi) because they have a scrapbook/rubber stamp store - because I have a crafty side (see my other blog here: http://worldofmichaeltrent.blogspot.com). So, we park the car and what do I see? An Applebee's restaurant. How cool is this? Then when we headed up to our favorite bookstore....what is coming in right next door? A Starbucks!!!

I can totally live here. LOL.

Caveman Say Buy Wood, Build Fire

Well, it was COLD the other night. I mean, cold, like "snow is coming" cold. So we drove to the outskirts of town to the place that sells wood. The girl said to fill up the trunk and she'll give us a price. So we picked wood out of the pile, filled the trunk, and it cost a whopping $3.50US.

On Sunday, Ruy and I took Gabi, Junior, and Gessana to the zoo in Paulinha, the town next to ours and only a 10 minute drive. Not bad for a FREE zoo.

Birthday Party for Ruy and Wagner

Saturday night brought out the half of Ruy's family that I have never met. Cousins, aunts, and other relatives from the far corners of Cosmopolis. I baked cupcakes all day for the kids. June brings a big holiday here called Festa Junina - it's folklore about the harvest. Corn is a big ingredient for this festival and a lot of the goodies were made with corn, popcorn, and wine!!

OMG - I'm Back In Brasil

Ok, so it's been a week since I got here and didn't post a thing. We had a few problems with the internet connection being so slow - but we think we got it fixed.

It's been a nice week. Weather is a bit on the colder side than I wanted. Mornings have a bit of a chill to them, as do the evenings. During the day it's much warmer. Been sleeping with 2 blankets, which, for me, is just strange in June and for Brasil. Ahhhh, global warming. LOL. And I forgot that this is the start of the brasilian winter, which means that the sun goes down around 6pm. Kinda feels like October here in the evenings. A bit depressing but....the beer helps me get over it.

So, let's see...what have I been up to? Got here Thursday. Not much happened. Unpacked. Checked out the house to see what is new since 3 months ago. The showers were installed in the bathrooms, the marble tops were put on the veranda and the terraces, the handrails were installed on the 2 staircases (now the kids can go up and down safely), the ceiling fans were installed in the whole house (not that we need them with the breeze we get) and...we got some furniture. Oh, the simple things in life.

Okay, Photos of the House

Well I've gotten a few emails from people saying "Where are the photos of the house?" Okay, here they are. The house is 4,200 sf. The first floor will be a business. The upper floor is the living area. 3 bedrooms, 1 big kitchen/living room/dining room. Winter garden and guest bathroom. The master bedroom and one guest room have terraces that have views of the city (town?) and the 2nd guestroom is right off the winter garden with lots of sun in the morning. The front veranda streches the whole front of the house and has views of the sugarcane fields in the distance. Not a tall building blocking any view - yet.

Please keep in mind that this house is far from finished. It needs to be painted - outside and inside - the front still needs to be put together and tiled, the back bbq area needs to be tiled and painted, and the stairs to the top floor needs to be tiled, the bathrooms need to have glass block walls built for the shower, and marble slabs will be placed on the terrace and veranda walls. There is also no furniture in the house - just a mattress and our luggage. Just a few things to keep in mind. LOL

We had the new marble kitchen counters installed yesterday. Keep in mind that the braces under the sink portion will be removed tomorrow and cabinets will be built under them. The marble is beautiful.

Cheap Pineapples

Okay, I love pineapples. Especially here. They are soooo sweet. I got some at the fair yesterday and immediately made fresh pineapple juice. No sugar needed.

Today, on the drive home from Pedreira, there was a guy selling pineapples by the side of the road. 12 for $2.50 US.

My Crafty Finds In Brasil

Okay, this post will not mean anything to anyone unless they are a crafter. So, if you're not, stop reading. LOL. Took a walk this morning to the bakery and there was this guy selling doors and windows in front of his house. I bought this old window for $7 US and plan to take out the glass, paint it, and put in mirrors. We also bought 2 sets of dishes for the house and they came packaged in these crates. Can you say "altered"? Wish I could get these crates home but that won't happen.

Just Gorgeous Here - Clear For Miles

It is just a gorgeous day here today. Because the house is 2 floors, you get the most amazing views of the surrounding town and outskirts. So, yesterday we went to the "club" to get our passes to use the pool. We were told that we had to first go to the local clinic to have our feet checked so we could enter the pool. Don't ask. So, we went to the clinic and we were told that the doctor was out to lunch until 2pm. Okay, we had some time to kill.

We went next door to the bakery so I could get a Fanta (love Fanta). There was this little girl in the store and she heard us speaking English. She asked Ruy if I was from here. He said no, he lives in the US, in NYC. Well, her eyes just bugged out. After I bought the Fanta she asked me if she could have my autograph. LOL. She had never seen, let alone met, a New Yorker, and she wanted my autograph to prove to her mother that she actually met one.

Of course for the rest of the day I kept saying that I was a celeb and should be treated with respect. Now I have to watch out for the paparazzi.

Saturday Morning Fair

This morning we went to the fair to get our fresh veggies and fruits. Every Saturday morning the locals walk over here to buy their food for the week. All the fruits and veggies are from local markets. You can also buy fresh fish, meats, eggs, sugar cane, even tshirts, CDs and parts for your oven.

The Day On The Farm (Fazenda)

On Saturday, we were invited to Richard's house for his birthday party. Richard just turned 7 years old. He was born with no legs below his knees and has to be carried around or pushed in his wheelchair. He and his family live on a farm, which they manage for the owner. They have bulls, cows, chickens, lots of dogs, orange trees, coffee trees, mango trees, and cherry trees. The views are amazing. About 20 people showed up.

Being the American, I was almost like a celebrity. I am sure that I am the first American most of them have ever met and to have me on their farm, hanging out with them, was extra special to them. Being a city boy, I love the farm life. I got to milk a cow for the first time in my life, got to pet a bull, and got to learn how to ride a motorcycle. We also walked through the fields to the river where we played with the kids. Overall an amazing day. They have invited me back to continue my lessons on the motorcycle, learn how to ride a horse, and, from what I understood, they want me to ride a bull. Yeah, right. That is not going to happen.

Finally Arrived

Okay, so I'm not the best travel blogger. I know, I know. I promised to post daily. Well not much to post. We arrived safely. The flight was uneventful. Took off on time and landed on time. As usual the food on the plane was horrible. So we landed, got the rental car, picked up Ruy's mom, and drove out to the house in Cosmopolis. I drove the whole way. Gotta get used it - right? The house is beautiful even if there is no furniture. Some friends lent us 2 metal tables and chairs. Others lent us dishes, pots and pans, and a freezer.

I have not written much because we have basically been here dealing with construction issues. The major issue was no water pressure in the shower or the upstairs sinks. Taking a shower the first 3 days was like standing under a leaf after a rainstorm. Drip, drip, drip. Sr. Joao finally came and said it was because we had used American faucets. But the shower was Brasilian. He changed the faucet to a Braslian one and viola, more pressure. The he changed the shower from one Brasilian brand to another and, viola, major pressure. Taking a shower now is a breeze. LOL.

Let's see, what else? We had to buy doorknobs for all the doors. Simple. Then we called the doorman/locksmith and he came to put in all the doorknobs and the moldings. Hmmm, that started yesterday. He said it would take all day - one hour per door. He got through 6 doors and said, because he is 68 and his body does not work as well as it used to, he was going to come back today to finish. Today he got here and he is still doing the other 2 doors. He did go home for lunch and, hopefully, it will not be a 3 hour lunch like yesterday. Hmmm, maybe I am just too American. So, 2 days shot for the doors. At least I am stamping. LOL

Only 1 day left until my next trip to Brasil. This will be my 9th trip and I have not been there since last year at this time. I really need it. I started this blog to give me a way to share my love of this country and the area the house is in, with others. Hope you enjoy the ride.
